1996, march 6 - northern cyprus hit by a general strike
more than 6,000 people demonstrated in the turkish sector of nicosia on wednesday as part of a public sector general strike that brought services in northern cyprus to a halt. administrative offices were closed and flights to turkey, the north's only air link to the outside world, were re-scheduled because of the nine-hour strike over the minimum wage. turkish cypriot authorities recently increased the monthly minimum wage by up to 30 percent to around $225, ignoring trade union demands for an 80 percent increase.
northern cyprus is recognised only by turkey. the island has been divided since turkish intervention in 1974 in response to a greek cypriot-led coup in nicosia.
