1996, october 24 - two hour general strike in slovakia
trade unions in slovakia conducted a two-hour shutdown, october 24, which closed most of the country's factories. rajko lesjak, secretary of the association of free trade unions told the media the objective of the general strike, which involved some 340,000 workers, was to force employers to the negotiating table. "we want the current collective agreement to remain unchanged while we negotiate amendments to the agreement," lesjak said.

employers have been asking to change a collective agreement introduced in 1990 and renewed in 1993. they want to reduce holiday, sick and redundancy pay as well as general wages for workers employed by companies in financial trouble.
