The year is 328 BC. The Hellenistic Culture has spread throughout the Mediterranean region. It is an Olympic year. Alexander the Great has brought Persia, Asia Minor and Egypt under the control of Greece. His plan to build new cities and rebuild others has begun to blossom. Learning, trade, philosophy, and science are all making great advances.

YOUR TASK is to produce an Ancient Greek Newspaper. It must contain , at the least, all of the following elements.

  1. Choose a name for your newspaper; make the Banner at the top of your paper.
  2. The newspaper will have at least 3 lead articles, with the appropriate Headlines. You will choose the 3 in depth lead stories from the list below. They will be 4 to 9 paragraphs. Lead articles will introduce a subject, provide some background with specific examples. They will show some analysis of the subject, by pointing the importance and/or consequences of what your topic discusses.

     SPORTS:

This might be about the ancient Olympics

     CURRENT EVENT:

This should focus on one of Alexander the Great’s battles or campaigns

     GENERAL INFORMATION:

This might discuss one of Alexander’s non-military achievements, articles of general interest, a biography, etc.

     TRAVEL:

This might include a highlight about one of the cities that Alexander built or rebuilt, or about one of the special sites of features of another place in the Greek empire of this time.

     CULTURE:

    Greek painting, sculpture and/or architecture

     RELIGION:

Focus on one of the Greek gods, their importance to Greece or one of the cities, their contribution to Greece, etc.

     SCIENCE:

Focus on one of the advances in math, science, medicine, physics or astronomy

     PHILOSOPHY:

This might focus on Socrates, Plato or Aristotle or on ETHICS or rhetoric or the role of the citizen, etc.

     GOVERNMENT:

Focus on the Greek democracy, some of the democratic reforms or some of the leading reformers.

  3. You will ALSO write 3 - 4 short articles that provide more background and understanding of these times. You may choose an item from the list above that was not yet used, or come up with your own idea. The short article will be from 1 to 3 paragraphs, with a very direct focus on a single theme.
  4. The newspaper will have at least 4 pictures, with captions. They may be hand drawn, photocopied or from the Internet. If they are not your own, they must be included in the bibliography.
  5. Provide a bibliography for each article and picture. It must follow the MLA format. There must be at least 4 different sources used throughout the newspaper [from print or Internet].

This assignment is due TBA. This will require work on your own, outside of the classroom. As a class, we will spend at least 3 half block periods in the library. You will turn in pre-drafts as per the schedule below:

Step 1: Turn in your choices for the 3 lead stories, with a brief description of the focus.

Step 2 Turn in your list of short articles; briefly explain what they will be about. Turn in a bibliography [MLA format] with at least two citations.

Step 3: Turn in a pre-draft of your first lead article.

Step 4: Turn in a pre-draft of your second article plus one of the short articles.

Note: you may always turn in pre-drafts ealy, in order to have the instructor review them sooner.

CAUTION:
* This work is to be based on factual data. Avoid making up 'FLUFF' that is about the topic, but that does not contain real information about the topic.
* Use words/vocabulary that you could explain to the teacher
* Be sure that the closing of each lead article contains an analysis that explains the topics importance, OR consequences.
