In October 1795, a young French officer came to France's attention by protecting the delegates of the National Convention. Over the next four years, he led the French in decisive victories over Austria, Sardinia, and Italy. As the national Directory weakened, he first became one of three consuls to rule France. He then led a bloodless coup d'etat and assumed control of France. At the same time, he was able to lead France's armies against the Second Coalition of anti-French powers [Britain, Austria and Poland. By 1802, all had signed peace treaties with France. He then turned his attention to restoring order at home.
