Pi Worksheet Activity

The purposes of this activity are:

  • to introduce you to the relationship that creates Pi
  • to introduce you to simple formulas and equations
  • to show you how to transfer those skills to a spreadsheet
  1. In pairs, you will visit the 10 work stations; each person will need to complete their own worksheet and sketch sheet
  2. Next to the name of each object, complete the information for the worksheet below.
  3. Use the cloth tape to
    1. carefully measure the circumference [C] of each object
    2. mark it in the circumference column for that object
    3. then carefully trace the circumference on the sketch paper provided to you [label the circle drawn by its number]. MEASURE IN CENTIMETERS.
  4. Use the ruler to measure the approximate diameter [d] [from the drawing on the sketch sheet]
  5. do this by carefully moving the ruler across the edges of the circle until you believe you have the longest diameter estimate.
  6. Write this length on the worksheet under diameter.
  7. Calculate the ratio of C/d in two ways.
    1. First write C/d as a fraction.
    2. Then, divide C by d [C÷d]
    3. write your answer as a decimal rounded to the hundredth place. Show the long division.

  1. En pares, usted visitará las 10 estaciones de trabajo; cada persona necesitará terminar su propia hoja de la hoja de trabajo y del bosquejo.
  2. Al lado del nombre de cada objeto, termine la información para la hoja de trabajo abajo.
  3. Utilice la cinta del paño
