Many Marine Aquarist I have been in contact with find the RIO by TAAM fails in this fashion.
This is the second RIO to fail on me in exactly the same way (Shame on me)
I have filed a complaint with the Consumers Product Safety Commission Online and mailed them these pictures

A close up of where the oil and other toxins
spewed out!  This could have been an expensive lesson had it happened earlier in the day.  I was lucky to have 5 lbs of carbon, a MAG 7, and a Poly Filter on hand.  Water was filtered for a water change but salt had not been added.   I added the salt, put about a pound of carbon in the over flow and put the Poly Filter in a Fluval 4 and dropped it in.

I then spent the next several hours skimming oil & crap off the surface of the water with a soup ladle.  I took the following day off to perform a 50 gallon water change and also changed the carbon out in the morning and put fresh Poly Filter (which I had to borrow from a friend) in the Fluval.  I then went online to Marine Depot and ordered 2 MAG 7's and one MAG 18 to do water changes.
This is the color the fist batch of Poly filter turned overnight.  The second batch was a little less dramatic.  The following day I performed a 50 gallon water change
