The homes were taxed by the
width. So to keep the taxes low,
they built them skinny and tall. Because of this the doors are very
narrow, so to get the large pieces of furniture in the house they
would hoist it up the outside. To help with this they built the
houses with a beam hanging out at the top as well as leaning out
over the street so that when you lifted furniture up to the top
floors, it would not hit the house. The government had to set up
limits because they would really lean them out and they became
quite dangerous.
