Hi everyone. I am researching my husbands family. Here is everything I know so far: Rosario Ognibene married Lauretta (last name unknown). They had 17 children but only 7 survived. Their names are Laura, Mary, Lucia, Rose, Michael, Toto (we believe was his nickname), Leon (born July 16, 1985 in Vallelunga Pratameno, Sicily). Vincenzo Bonasera married Lucia Stoleto. They had 5 children and their names are Ottazia (also called Victoria), Mildred (also called Milli), John, Anthony, Rosa (also called Rosa, born Jan 11,1900 in Vallelunga Pratameno, Sicily). Leon Ognibene and Rosa Bonasera where 3rd cousins to each other. They immigrated to the USA around 1905 and got married in USA on Sep 4, 1919. They had 4 children, Loretta, Raymond (we believe his name was changed from Rosario), James and Leon Jr. Loretta Ognibene visited Palermo a long time ago and has found that many family members are living there. If anyone knows anything about these families or is related, please contact us. We are very interested in finding/meeting long lost family members. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give us.

My grandfather was Samuel Scinta of Buffalo, NY and he was from Vallelunga. He had 9 brothers and sisters and his mother's name was DeCarlo. He was born in 1906. He was also related to the LoBue family, however I am not sure how - possibly through a sibling. This info may help or please respond if you can expand. Thanks.

Wondering if anyone is familiar with or related to any lapaglia's and Alessi's. Hoping to verify an old family story dating back to the early 1900's. Wondering how true it is. If anyone knows anything about the alessi's and a story relating to the murder of my great grandfather on his vineyard by local workers would appreciate hearing more. Because of his death, the relatives i have on the alessi side were forced to flee to america.

Hi, I stumbled across your great web site researching my family history. My father's family is from Vallelunga, Sicily. My greatgrandfather, Domenico Gaeta, came to the US entering in New Orleans. His wife, Rosalia LoBue Gaeta (born in 1864) came to the US in 1906 (entering through Ellis Island) with 3 children, Marianna, Guseppia and Vincenzo (my grandfather). Vincenzo was born in 1885 and was single when he arrived. He married Antonia DeCarlo, daughter of Frank and Carrie DeCarlo - we believe they were from the Buffalo, NY area. Antonia was born in 1893. She died in 1918 and shortly thereafter, my grandfather, Vincenzo Gaeta, returned to Italy and remarried, bringing his second wife to the USA in 1920. I would like to hear from anyone who might have information about the Gaeta family from Vallelunga. Also, anyone that would have information about Rosalia LoBue's family and also the family of Frank and Carrie DeCarlo (I am guessing that Frank was actually Francesco as that is my uncle's name Francesco (Frank) Gaeta) and assume he was named after his maternal grandfather. My father, Dominic Vincent Gaeta, was named after his grandfather and father. Hope to hear from someone. Thanks. Mary Lynne (Gaeta) Videll

My grandfather Francisco Vallelunga was born in Trabia, Sicily in 1872. He and his two brothers Joseph and Steven Vallelunga came to America about 1902 and settled in the Pittsburgh, PA artea. The two brothers changed their name to Walling and operated a produce business in Pittsburgh, PA. My grandfather married Catherina Taormina, from Cerda, Sicily, in 1905 in Pittsburgh. They later moved to Los Angeles, California. I think my grandfather had daughters from a marriage in Sicily that later moved to Los Angeles. If any one has information please email me. Thanks

It's nice to know that Vallelunga is a REAL place! We have only recently found out how to spell it correctly. My family is tracing the roots of my grandparents, Carsodonia (sp.)Lapaglia married to Maritina(sp.) Miceli. We know that they came from Vallelunga, Sicily. I also know my father, Gaetano (aka Anthony G.) Lapaglia was born there in approximately 1896. If anyone has ANY information about the LAPAGLIA family please reach me at angelsetc@cox-internet.com. By the way, this is a GREAT website. Thanks to you, John, for putting this together. I am the great-granddaughter of Rosario Malta and Rosalia Licata. Their son, Calogero (Charles) married Calogera (Lucille Costanza) in the Parrocchia S. Maria di Loreto on June 6, 1898. They emmigrated to the USA two sons, Rosario (Russell) and Filippo aka John (my father) aboard the Santa Ana leaving from Palermo and arriving in the USA at Louisiana on October 21, 1901. The brothers were age 1yr and my father was only 4 months old. If there is any family still in Vallelunga, I would like to know. And, before I sign off, may I thank you all immensely for this great opportunity to communicate with people from my ancestral home. I am now a very young 70 anne and am trying to put together some family history for my children and grandchildren. There is virtually no one left to ask any questions and they didn't tell us anything much when they were alive. I am unsure of ever being able to visit because of lack of funds but if I can, I will do so someday before I die. Maybe one day someone of my decendants will come there and I will be with them in spirit if nothing else. Again...thank you. Mille Gracie!

Our 17 year old son Jason will be racing motorcycles in the European Championship at Vallelunga on April 27-29. WHAT A FABULOUS WEBSITE!!! My grandfather Guisseppe Lorenzo Audino was born in Vallelunga around 1902 and came to the America around 1914. First to Jamestown, New York and then Chicago. I can't believe I read about a Nicolo Audino on your site or a linked site. I am so astounded. How can I get in touch with Nicolo and/or anyone who can help me find someone who knew my grandfather Guisseppe Lorenzo Audino or my great grandfather Mariano Audino? Also, I was told when I was a young kid that I had a relative in Sicily who was a mayor of a town? Can you help me find out? Thanks.

My great-grandparents, Loreto Cardinale and Grazia Greco Sodaro, left Vallelunga around 1900 and settled in Buffalo, NY. Hi John I have just read your guestbook again after about 6 months and I found with much interest the letter speaking of Father Zuzze. My husband, Don (see letter from Don Adams) and I visited Vallelunga April, 1997 and met Father Zuzze; who has the same name as my mother's maiden name but he is not related. He took us on a tour of Our Lady of Loretto chuch in Vallelunga which is located in the same Piazza as my mother's homeplace of 80 years ago(and it is still standing and in good condition.) He explained the black madonna had come from our local church, St.Anthony's which is located in the west side of Buffalo. He was such a congenial man. We enjoyed his time with us very much. Vallelunga was a beautiful town and it was such a meaningful visit for me. We found and visited with my deceased mother's 1st cousin, Vincenzo Zuzze and his family and met many other family members when we were there. Everyone was so friendly and hospitable to us. Thank you for these connections. Hope to hear more from your guestbook.

Hello John,
Very interesting web site. I found information that I had not known before.
Vallelunga is such a small city that if your readers are at this web site they are either 1) related to someone with this name, 2) into auto racing, 3) or their ancestors were from Vallelunga. If their ancestors were from Vallelunga we may be related as my ancestors lived there from about 1700 to about 1905. It is my understanding that descendents of my great uncles still live there.
Some of the families from Vallelunga that intermarried with the Sanfratello family are La Russa, Vullo, Gullo, Mancuso, Barone, Miceli, Sangiorgio, Liuzzo, Ferranti, Mistretta, Giuffrida, Cavarretta, Grasso, Muscarella, Squitieri, Costanzo, Sinatra, Vilardo, Guagenti, Cammarata, Pellitteri, Tripi, Blandina, Notaro, Orlando, Cimo, Federico, Sammarco, Insinna, Modica, Cirrincione, Nugara, Palermo, La Monica, Licata, Cardinale, Palmeri, Sammarco, Ognibene, and D’Anca. While I do not have extensive information on these families, your readers are welcome to contact me with the names of specific individuals to see if we have common ancestors. Dates of birth and/or death (as well as wife’s maiden name) would help as I have over 3,400 individuals to search through in my program and many names were repeated generation after generation. The writer should include his or her name in any correspondence.

Hi, John. I am also a Vallelunga who has relatives in Trabia. My great-grandfather was Antonino Vallelunga, and (of course) my grandfather was named Sebastiano. Our family nick-name in the town was "piri-piridu", a spinning top, because someone in the family was good at dancing a fisherman's jig. You and I must be somehow related along with a number of Vallelungas in San Jose who are also "Trabioti". Although I now live in Modesto, I was born in San Jose in 1958. Great job on the page.

Sorry it took me so long to discover what a lovely family you have. I hope to meet you all in Orlando in 1998, and it's nice to know how to pronounce Lene. Pat Gilstrap (CA '59)

My family is from Vallelunga, Sicily. I wonder if that is the origin of your name? Nice web site! - Laura Mancuso

Since I have not yet had time to do my family history page, and in response to Reinhold's excellent comments below, I thought I'd mention that my father's parents are from Trabia, Sicily, just outside Palermo. While I do not have any proof yet, my guess is that the name originated from the mountain town of Vallelunga, a bit inland from Trabia. My Mother was born in Genoa. The mixing of a Sicilian and northern Italian, from what I hear, is somewhat rare!

You have a very attractive site! But what I'm missing is the explanation where the name "Vallelunga" comes from. Or did I miss a page? -- Anyway, I study languages and names. Your name comes from Italian "valle" = valley, and "lunga" = long. In other words, it means "Longvalley." Last names or family names were used first around the 14th century in Europe. The names reflected the profession of the family head (such as Smith), character traits (such as Goodman), physical appearance (such as Short), nicknames (such as Bigeyes), or place names (such as Romano and Longvalley). So, your ancestors came from a mountainous region in Italy and lived in or near a long valley. But as there are more than one such valley, Vallelungas are not necessarily related. End of mini-lesson. Tutto finito!

I still think talking cars are more fun than e-mail, but this is purdy cool. I gave you bum info - you don't need to have the word "mail" in our e-mail address. Everything else is ok.

Hi John, job well done on the home page. I'm thinking of creating an east coast version. Any comments? I have a copy of QuarterdeckTotal Web that I'm working through the tutorial on.
