What is IMAP?
IMAP is an acronym that stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. More specifically, it's a mail protocol that permits an email client to access remotely-stored messages and folders as if they were local.
What is the name of the Sonic.net IMAP server?
imap.sonic.net
What's the difference between IMAP and POP?
With POP mail, each message must be downloaded and stored as a local copy on every computer that you use to access your email. When you get a lot of email, or access your email from many locations, managing your inboxes can start to get complicated. With IMAP, each computer accesses the messages that are stored on the server, and you don't need to download any local copies. The inbox for your Sonic.net account will look the same on your home computer, work computer, and every other IMAP-capable email device that you use.
Does IMAP cost any extra to use?
Nope! IMAP service is available to anyone that has a Sonic.net mail account.
How do I use IMAP?
To use IMAP, you need to create an account in your email client (Outlook Express, Apple Mail, etc.) and set it to use IMAP instead of POP (or any other listed protocols). Next, make sure the account is using the incoming server imap.sonic.net, and use the Sonic.net username and password of the account that you wish to access.
What are my options for mail deletion?
When you delete messages with IMAP, most email clients will place the messages in a Trash folder. The messages will stay here until you empty the trash folder, or they will automatically expire in 2 weeks.
Do you provide support for the Apple iPhone?
Though the Apple iPhone has been shown to work well with imap.sonic.net, Sonic.net technical support is not trained in the particulars of the iPhone mail client.
