Modem
Beginning with System 7.6, the Macintosh operating system has included TCP/IP networking capabilities in the form of the "Open Transport" package. By configuring the PPP, TCP/IP, and Modem control panels, dialup internet connections can be created and used. On systems after the release of the iMac computer (OS 8.1 through OS 9.2) the Remote Access takes the place of PPP.
-
To access your Modem control panel, open the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and click on Modem.
Make sure your Modem settings are correct. These will vary by manufacturer.
- For "Connect via" select the port your modem is connected to. This is often the "Modem Port" for external modems.
- For "Modem" select your model's make and model.
- For "Sound" we recommend selecting "On" for troubleshooting purposes. You can prevent your modem from making its dialup and handshake tones by setting this to "Off."
- For "Dialing" select "Tone" or "Pulse" ass appropriate for your phone line.
- If your phone line has an unusual dial tone, you may wish to select "Ignore dial tone." Otherwise we recommend leaving this unmarked.
