PPP
Beginning with System 7.6, the Macintosh operating system has included TCP/IP networking capabilities in the form of the "Open Transport" package. By configuring the PPP, TCP/IP, and Modem control panels, dialup internet connections can be created and used.
This document contains the recommended settings for configuring the TCP/IP protocol on a Macintosh running System 7.6 through early versions of OS 8.1 to use a modem connection.
-
To configure your Macintosh to connect to the internet using a modem, go to Apple Menu, then to Control Panels. Select PPP control panel.
Make sure your basic PPP settings are correct:
- Under "Connection" select "Registered User."
- For "Name" enter your Sonic.net login name.
- For "Password" enter your Sonic.net password.
- Select "Save Password" so you will not be required to enter it every time you connect.
- For "Number" enter your local Sonic.net access number. You can find your local Sonic.net access number using the POP Finder located at http://www.sonic.net/cgi-bin/pops.pl.
Click the button labeled "Options" for more settings.
-
Under the "Connection" tab mane sure that "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" is checked. This will allow your computer to autodial when you use an internet application such as a web browser or email program.
-
Under the "protocol" tab, both "Allow error correction and compression in modem" and "Use TCP header compression" should be checked. "Connect to a command-line host" should not be checked. Click the button labeled "OK" to return to the previous window.
-
Close the PPP window, and you will be prompted to save your changes. Click the button labeled "Save."
