TCP/IP
Beginning with System 7.6, the Macintosh operating system has included TCP/IP networking capabilities in the form of the "Open Transport" package. By configuring the PPP, TCP/IP, and Modem control panels, dialup internet connections can be created and used. On systems after the release of the iMac computer (OS 8.1 through OS 9.2) the Remote Access takes the place of PPP.
This document contains the recommended settings for configuring the TCP/IP protocol on a Macintosh running System 7.6 through OS 9.2 to use a modem connection.
-
To configure TCP/IP settings, open the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and click on "TCP/IP."
-
Make sure that your TCP/IP settings are correct. For dialup connections, use the following settings:
- For "Connect via" select "PPP" (if you system is still using the old FreePPP or ConfigPPP client, select "MacPPP" instead),
- For "Configure using" select "PPP server." This will cause TCP/IP to acquire your IP, Subnet Mask, and Router Address (commonly referred to as the Gateway Address) automatically upon connecting.
- For "Name server addr." enter our DNS server addresses. These are 208.201.224.11 and 208.201.224.33.
- For "Search domains" enter "sonic.net."
close the TCP/IP window. You will be prompted to save the changes you have just make. Click the button labeled "Save."
If your TCP/IP control panel does not allow you to make changes, your settings may have been locked. Open the Edit menu and select "User Mode..." to change the user mode, thereby allowing access.
