Netgear FVS318 Firewall Router Screenshots (Windows XP)

This document is intended to assist in the first-time setup of the Netgear FVS318 Firewall Router to use Sonic.net connection settings. Sonic.net technical support representatives are not trained in advanced router configuration.

Accessing the Router Interface

  1. Connect the router to your DSL modem and computer according to the router's instruction manual.
  2. Open the Control Panel from the Start Menu. From here, double-click on the "Network Connections" icon.

  3. Double-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon.

  4. Click on the "Properties" button in the lower right corner of the Status window.

  5. From the small window in the center, double-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"

  9. You will first be asked if you would like to use the set up wizard to complete the configuration. This is up to you, but we will show you the manual settings in this walkthrough. Select the radio button next to "No" and click the "Next" button.

  10. Basic Settings

    • Sonic.net DSL connections do not use authentication to connect, so select "No" when asked if your connection requires a login.
    • For the Internet IP address, select the first radio button, labeled "Get dynamically from ISP."
    • For the DNS servers, select the "Use these DNS servers" radio button. Then, enter 208.201.224.11 for the primary DNS, and 208.201.224.33 for the secondary.

Click on "Apply" to set this configuration into the router.

  11. At this point, the configuration is complete. Select "Log Out" from the left-hand side menu.

The following are optional settings you may wish to configure.

  • If you'd like to set up a new username and password to access your router in the future, select "Set Password" from the menu on the left. Make sure you remember this information! Without it, you will not be able to access the router in the future.

  • Select "Diagnostics" from the menu to see a few tools you can use for troubleshooting if your router is having problems. You can use ping, trace route, and reboot the router from here. Handy stuff, to be sure...
