Netscape 7.0 Configuration

  1. This document assumes that the computer in question has already had Netscape 7.0 installed successfully, and that the setup procedure has already been completed. This document is intended for use in helping guide through double-checking for errant settings and configuration problems, and shows only the configuration reccomended by Sonic.net technical support.

To view your mail settings in Netscape 7 first open your mail client, then go to the "Edit" menu and select "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings..."

  2. Doing so will present you with Netscape's mail and newsgroup configuration interface. By default, you will first be shown your Account Settings. The "Account Name" and "Your Name" may be specified however you please. Typically people use their real names in the "Your Name" field, though you are not required to do so. The "Email Address" must be an address that is hosted at Sonic.net for our outgoing mail server to send your mail

  3. By clicking the button labelled "Advanced" you may choose which outgoing mail server you would like to use with this account. Mail servers may be added to this list under the Outgoing Server (SMTP) interface (detailed later below)

  4. The Server Settings category on the left allows you to specify the Server name, username, port, and various other settings associated with retreiving email. The Server Type should be specified as "POP Mail Server," the Server Name should be "pop.sonic.net" and your User Name should be in lowercase. Pop.sonic.net operates off of Port 110.

  5. The Outgoing Server (SMTP) category should show that you are using "mail.sonic.net" as your outgoing mail server. It should not be necessary to specify the port to be used, though mail.sonic.net uses port 25 if you which to input it. Do not select "Use name and password" for outgoing mail, as this will interfere with sending mail through our server.

  6. If for any reason it becomes necessary to modify, add, or remove an outgoing mail server from your Netscape 7 configuration, click "Advanced" in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) category. Here you will be able to manipulate your outgoing mail server settings in detail.

  7. Sonic.net's outgoing mail server name is mail.sonic.net, on port 25, requiring no username nor password. To ensure that there is no confusion between your Netscape 7.0 and our mail server, do not use SSL for this purpose.
