Alternate Ports in Eudora 6

With the practice of email port blocking, it is often necessary to use an alternate port in order to send mail. The standard authentication-only outgoing mail port is 587, but the default Eudora 6.2 interface does not provide a mechanism for specifying this. This document is intended to help specify alternate port numbers in Eudora 6.2 on Windows XP.

  1. Navigate to the folder containing your Eudora installation. By default this will be C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\. Open the subfolder labeled "extrastuff" and locate the file named "esoteric.epi."

    locate the esoteric.epi file
  2. Copy the esoteric.epi file into your main Eudora install folder.

    copy esoteric.epi to your install folder
  3. Restart Eudora, open the Tools menu and select Options.

    Tools -> Options
  4. Select the "ports" category, and you will be able to specify alternate ports for a variety of purposes. Sonic.net recommends the use of port 587 with SMTP authentication and StartTLS when possible.
