Dialup Setup

All releases of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95 OSR1 has included an Internet Setup Wizard application. The following are instructions for use of the Internet Setup Wizard in a Windows XP Home environment.

  1. Open your Start menu and click on Run.

  2. Enter "inetwiz" and click "OK." to continue.

  3. This will start the Internet Connection Wizard. You will be asked a series of questions, which your computer will use to configure itself to dial Sonic.net. Select "Connect using my phone line" and click "Next."

  4. If you have not previously configured your Windows system to recognize your modem, you may be prompted run the Add Hardware Wizard (screenshot). If this is the case, please follow the steps detailed in the Add Hardware Wizard interface, then proceed.

    Windows will need some information about your location. Select the country you are in, and enter your area code. If you have to dial a number to access an outside line (typical for a hotel or some office phone systems), enter this information as well. Click "OK" to continue.

  5. Windows will display the locations it is aware of. Make sure that "My Location" is selected, then click "OK" to continue.

  6. Enter your local access number in the field labeled "Telephone Number." You can find your local access number using our POPfinder Tool online. Uncheck "Use area code and dialing rules" unless you have to dial a number to reach an outside line. Click "Next" to continue.

  7. For your "User name" enter your Sonic.net account name in lowercase with no spaces, followed by "@sonic.net". Enter your password as well. Sonic.net passwords are case-sensitive. Click "Next" to continues.

  8. Name your connection "Sonic.net." Click "Next" to continue.

  9. You will be prompted to start configuring an email account. Select "Yes" and click "Next" to continue. Step 7

  10. Enter your name in the field labeled "Display Name" and click "Next" to continue.

  11. Enter your email address. This will be your Sonic.net account name followed by "@sonic.net" in most cases. Click "Next" to continue.

  12. Outlook Express needs to know which mail servers to get mail from and to send mail through. The incoming mail server is a POP3 server, and its name is "pop.sonic.net". The outgoing mail (SMTP) server is named "mail.sonic.net". Click "Next" to continue.

  13. To retreive mail from pop.sonic.net, Outlook Express will need your Account Name & Password. Please note that your Account Name is always in lowercase for this purpose, and that your password is case-sensitive. Select "Remember Password" to prevent having to type your password every time you check for new mail. Click "Next" to continue.

  14. Once all of the above information has been provided, Outlook Express is ready to be your mail client. You can start using it immediately. Click "Finish" to start using the internet. You can browse the web using Internet Explorer and send & receive email using Outlook Express. Both will automatically dial as needed.

  15. Sonic.net recommends setting up one or more altnernate dialup once the Internet Connection Wizard is completed.
