Technology Benefits

Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's CDMA service employs a 13 kb/s vocoder, providing improved voice quality, while virtually eliminating static and crosstalk. Increased spectrum capacity allows for the completion of a greater number of calls, avoiding most busy signals and dropped calls. In addition, soft hand-off capabilities make cell site transitions unnoticeable. Voice privacy is an inherent benefit afforded by digital technology, since commercial scanner equipment cannot intercept digital voice communications over the spectrum. Transmitting at a fraction of the power of analog systems, battery life for CDMA handheld units is greatly improved allowing as much as five hours of talk time and 48 hours of standby time.

CDMA At A Glance

As more and more people become cellular users, the traditional analog systems are becoming taxed. CDMA has proven to be the best digital service standard, because it increases spectrum call capacity by up to ten times more than analog, therefore offering the highest capacity potential of the various technologies competing to serve as the foundation for all cellular communications. In addition, the technology enables Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile to meet the demands of ongoing subscriber growth.

CDMA is a robust wideband technology that assigns an individual code to each voice or data call broadcast over the radio spectrum. The receiving phone identifies the correct code, which allows the specific conversation or data to be distinguished among the multiple conversations spread across a wide segment of the broadcast spectrum. This multiple access technique allows for each radio channel to hold more than one conversation. CDMA digital phones have the ability to function in both digital and analog networks by first scanning for CDMA coverage and then defaulting to analog if used outside the digital service area.
