CFOX Guitar
Darker than the typical honey colored koa, CFOX guitar. Rob Girdis proudly holds his all-koa parlor model guitar at our shop. Back view. Taken during Healdsburg Guitar Festival 2001.

Some of the old-timers may recall the days when nicely flamed koa was available for about a tenth its present price. In the early '80s, we used to sell sets at The Luthier's Mercantile like that pictured at right for around $35 a set. One can't say it was readily available; we had to buy from the Martin Guitar Company, who brought it in in log form.

Not much needs to be said about koa as an instrument wood. Lots of guitars are have been made with it. One tip I recall is that sometimes when bending sides you end up baking some of the wood's greenish extractives into them. To avoid this, you can soak the sides in water and replace the water from time to time until the water remains clear.

Koa is often cut from stumps, and in fact much of what has been on the market in the last 10 years has been from stumps. The photo at right is of a tree just opened up. Koa grows only in Hawaii.
