Cat Yronwood made a statement in another post suggesting that one should
only use "holy books" for divination, Crowley (sorry about putting cat
and crowley in the same sentence cat) makes the same observation in
chapter 18 "on divination" in his magick in theory and practice

"We may observe in passing that a common mode of divination is to
inquire of books by placing the thumb at random within the leaves. The
books of the Sybil, the works of Vergil and the bible have been used
very frequently for this purpose. For theoretical justification, one
must assume that the book employed is a perfect representation of the
Universe. "

It has been my experience however, that any book may be used depending
on the diviners ability to put itself in the "proper frame of mind"
where by the desired information about the subject at hand is implied,
however symbolically or allegorically by the words or symbols chosen. I
have had particularly good luck with this in using books in languages i
did not understand and then having the relevant passages translated.

But i have carried this even further, and taken it out of the realm of
bibleomancy by attaining the necessary "state of mind" and then spinning
myself about with my eyes closed and then opening them and deriving the
oracle from the first thing i see or alternatively, touch.

Which leads me to think that the tool used is not so important as the
minds ability to relate seemingly unconnected objects or information to
the problem at hand.
