Low Brow Content in the Fine Art Form Opens in the Tenderloin
In 1893 a shop in the Tenderloin was raided for selling "Dirty Paintings" and consequently forced to close down. At the time such art was considered lude, crimminal and unpresentable. Not for civilized folk. Thank God times have changed. Now "dirty paintings" are received as works of art and to some "Fine Art." Well its time to bring them back to the Tenderloin where they belong.
This March (2003) "The Shooting Gallery" is proud to announce its Grand Opening in the seedy Tenderloin neighborhood. The new gallery will specialize in "Low Brow / Alternative Arts." Art reflective of the neighborhood and current times. One-man shows and group shows themes will run for 1 month periods. The gallery will show case new as well as established artists from the local community as well as those from around the country.
Low brow art is reflective of a particular social strata.... documents certain social strata and movementrs ... there is already art that reflects upper class tastes and life styles but there is the flip side of the upper class. Until recently the upper class has defined what is and is not fine art. But there is a richness of the not upper class. The art of this low clas has not been held up as being worthy of the description of "fine art".... Low brow art is more representative of the depth and width of or the true nature of culture. It contains the reality of the normal every day working people.
The Shooting Gallery is owned and curated by Justin Giarla a local artist who's been on involved in the arts for over 12 years. The gallery can be reached through the following media
