Camaraderie of the Raindrops

Mara Lynn Barbee

Rain pelts the windows and batters the roof,
Rain forms puddles of widening rings,
It's pouring buckets outside.
It sounds on the roof like someone's pouring marbles, and raindrops race
each other in an effort to smack the ground.
The radio says it will be raining cats and dogs all week.
It is almost too dark to see outside, and the noisy raindrops drown out
conversation as they attempt to cave in our roof.
I imagine raindrops swimming through the sky,
And bouncing around in puddles as their fellow droplets land on them.
I imagine the heavy gray clouds above, sending down rain in sheets until
they are relieved of their burden.
I imagine frail plants swaying under the attack of droplets, and the
stronger trees bearing it in stoic silence.
I imagine all the animals hiding in their burrows, waiting out the storm.
I imagine this as I lay inside with my eyes closed, listening to the
camaraderie of the raindrops.
