Ventana Vineyards Home Page:
Design Methodology

(note: click on screen shots to see full size page)

Design Goals: Create a graphically rich home page that projects branding - a sense of the winery’s spirit and wines - that welcomes the visitor - contains logical navigation - contains graphic elements that can be carried to inner pages allowing for a unified, coherent site design.

Variation 1, Version 1

Elements:

• Border – tan border, with rounded upper left corner, that fades away from corner.
• Winery Image
• Title in traditional face, subtitle in modern type
• Wine label
• Navigation

Process & Reasoning:

The border serves several functions. It creates a softer entrance for the eye and avoids the harsher feeling of a photo slapped onto the page. It provides a counterbalance to the label. And it provides a graphical element, variations of which can be used on inner pages to give the site a cohesive look.

The Winery image was chosen for its richness, and its visual movement

The Title was set in a traditional type and embossed to project solidify and experience. The subtitle was set in a san serif and italicized to convey modern and futuristic look.

The logo was chosen to promote branding. It overlaps the picture and cast a shadow to stand out. The light areas of the photo and curve of the grapes lead the eye to the logo, and its simple, solid design create a resting place and a contrast to the more intricate photo of the tasting room .

The navigation was set in a modern, easy to read type above the logo as an easy location for the eye to go after scanning the logo. Its shape reflects the grapes.

Variation 1, Version 1a

Elements:

• Slight canvas texture
• Mouse over pointer

Process & Reasoning:

A canvas texture was applied to the Tasting Room image to buffer the soften the image and allow the type and label to further stand out. Additionally, when the pointer (mouse) is place over a navigational element, an arrow fashioned from the bottom of the Ventana label will appear next to it and the area around the type will take on a reddish tone.

Variation 1, Version 1b

Elements:

• Additional photographs.

Process & Reasoning:

Here the texture of the main image becomes more critical so that the additional photographs will stand out. The patio was chosen to reinforce that the viewer is invited to visit and will find a comfortable place to relax and enjoy Ventana Wines. The photo of Doug and Luanne connect the viewer on a more human and personal level. The barrels serve to reinforce the traditional elements of a winery.

Variation 2

Elements:

• Background
• Title and subtitle
• Label
• Photographs
• Navigation

Process & Reasoning: The background was chosen to soften the page against the other elements. The Title text and fonts maintain the tradition established above. The photographs are arranged to create a curve around the navigation that leads to the label. In the mouseover position, the bullet and type turn gold.

Please Note:

The navigation will not be functional until the home page is coded - these examples are pictorial mock-ups only.
