ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
King Crimson -- "Vrooom"/"Marine 475" -- Thrak (Discipline Global Mobile, 1995)
* Louie Belogenis, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, Kenny Wolleson -- "Rashied" -- Unbroken (Tick Tock, 2005)
* John Voigt, Mike Khoury, Ben Hall -- [untitled track 5] -- Horizon (BrokenResearch, 2006)
* Jeff Gauthier Goatette -- "Ahufafat" - One and the Same (Cryptogramophone, 2006)
* Collectif Inaudible -- "Festina Lente" -- Cardo (Emanem, 2006)
A shimmering gray of a piece, with breathy atonal flute, acoustic
guitar, and percussion.
* Ante Nata -- "Raschia La Notte" -- Ante Nata (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2005)
* Eri Yamamoto -- "Takeda No Komoriuta" -- Coablt Blue (Thirsty Ear, 2006)
Alan Silva and Oluyemi Thomas -- "Root and Branch" -- Transmissions (Eremite, 1999)
Duets of mostly bowed bass (Silva) and various woodwinds, especially
bass clarinet (Thomas). This one's got a darker, cooler feel that
most of the others, although a restrained pace permates the session.
Nicely blazing free-jazz with a cold-fire feel from Thomas, who's
also part of the local trio Positive Knowledge.
-- 4:00 p.m. --

* Actis Band -- "Sentiero Del Re" -- Allende (Leo Records, 2006)

* Steuart Liebig/The Mentones -- "Manchild Hustle" -- Nowhere Calling (pfMentum, 2006)
*! Sparks -- "There's No Such Thing As Aliens" -- Hello Young Lovers (In the Red, 2006)
* Gutbucket -- "Disciplining the Fugitive" -- Sludge Test (Cantaloupe, 2006)
# Tom Nunn -- "Streaming" [all]/"Explorentials" [excerpt] -- Burning Palms (Garuda, 2000)
Nunn playing the Octatonic T-Rodimba, a metallic instrument that
can be played like a xylophone for cool tuned-percussion sounds
("Streaming") or bowed/tweaked/amplified to produce echoey metallic
sounds ("Explorentials"). Cool stuff, and probably fun to watch
live. Nunn will be one of about a half-dozen artists performing
tonight for "Sonic Foundry," an evening of musicians on invented
instruments, as part of the Edgetone Music Summit.
-- 5:00 p.m. --
# Hans Fjellstad, Peter Kowald, Dana Reason, Jason Robinson -- "Manifold Runners" -- Dual Resonance (Circumvention, 2003)
# Comologic -- "Axis" -- Syntaxis (Circumvention, 2002)
# The Abstractions -- "Outfuck" -- Sonic Conspiracy (Edgetone, 2002)
# The Abstractions -- "Telephone - Long Distance" -- Sonic Conspiracy (Edgetone, 2002)
Tossing out a sample of what the Edgetone label (the folks responsible
for the Edgetone summit) is like. "Outfuck" is a 36-second attack
reminiscent of John Zorn's Naked City: punk, metal, and pit-bull jazz.
"Telephone" is a cooler sound, fast sax/vibes in a free jazz context
and much less of the crazy sonic experimentation that goes with the
rest of the album.
I'd intended to play a longer and weirder track, "Dinner with Blue
Dragon @ Extending Claw Cafe," for the second part. Turns out I've
done that trick before, though, playing "Outfuck" then "Dinner."
Granted, it was three years ago, but still --
I've repeated transitions too many times in the past and figured
I shouldn't do it here.
* Robert Marcel Lepage -- "Pee Wee Fait des Arcahaismes, Moi Je Fait des Anachronismes" -- Pee Wee et Moi (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2006)
* John Bishop -- "All Day Pass" -- Nothing If Not Something (Origin, 2006)
One of the more adventurous tracks on the CD, still
carrying a sound friendly to mainstream jazz fans but with a nicely
fluttering, fast sax solo form Rick Mandyck and a great sense of
freedom.
* Francois Carrier -- "Happening (four)" -- Happening (Leo Records, 2006)
