Horizontal lines denote microphone breaks.
* William Parker/Hamid Drake -- "First Communion 2" -- First Communion/Piercing the Veil (AUM Fidelity, 2006)
* The John Lewis Sound -- "Get to This Y'all!" -- Get to This Y'all! (Miles Ahead, 2002)
A buddy of mine once nearly started a fight by playing this on the jukebox at a bar. He was all into the song, swaying and soaking it in, but the drunkards near us were pissed off. The bartender compromised by disconnecting the song but giving my friend his dollar back. We stuck the dollar back into the jukebox, punched up "Within You, Without You" as many times as we could, and took off.
* Rocco John -- "Gentilesse" -- Don't Wait Too Long (Coalition of Creative Artists, 2007)
Here, a quartet led by sax and trumpet steps through some lively originals, accessible jazz pieces but with Rocco John sometimes going absolutely nuts on his solos. Great stuff.
He's got a more sedate side too, playing standards and originals with Alaskan musician Murray Nash in a duo/trio called Rare Form. In fact, a couple of track son Don't Wait Too Long are reprises from Rare Form, where they appear in more polite form; I prefer these knock-down, drag-out versions myself, but the Rare Form stuff seems worth checking out.
* Frank Carlberg -- "Sight Is Just Dust" -- State of the Union (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2007)
Thomas Schulz, piano -- "The People United Will Never Be Defeated" [variations 35 and 36 of 36, and Thema] -- Piano: Rzewski; Bach (Wooden Fish, 2002)
Steve Lacy, Irene Aebi, Frederic Rzewski -- "Do Not Judge Me Lightly #2" -- Packet (New Albion, 1995)
Locally (and not at all relevant to this track), three musicians have
been reviving Steve Lacy's "Tips," a piece for voice and two saxophones.
The three are Bruce Ackley,
Phillip Greenlief, and
Aurora Josephson,
and they'll be performing "Tips" again on Oct. 20 at Noe Valley Ministry
and Jan. 19, 2007, at the
Jazzschool in Berkeley.
* Dan Loomis Group -- "Pied Noir" -- I Love Paris (Jazz Excursion, 2007
Modern classical stuff from Frederic
Rzewski, who was going to be in town tonight for a performance
of this piece. These are the closing movements, as I obviously
didn't have time to play the whole thing.
More Rzewski stuff, this time with him guesting on a
Steve Lacy/Irene Aebi project. If you're not familiar with these
folks, Lacy (a jazzster by heart) would write these art-song pieces for
Aebi to sing in her dusky alto voice.
I've got very little experience with those pieces, and I'm still trying
to acquire the taste for classical song in general (the non-repeating
quality and complex melodic lines makes it harder than pop music,
to my ears).

This piece served as a kind of transition into my
second shift.

Played to note the tragic passing of Rod Poole, a guitarist in the
vein of John Fahey. Poole was murdered in Los Angeles recently, allegedly
knifed by the passenger of a car that was driving recklessly; a reprint
of the L.A. Times account can be found
