A four-part suite celebrating the life of Malcolm X. Cohran was apparently part of the AACM in its early days. Lots of interesting contrasting styles on this album. This opening segment, apparently relating to Malcolm as a child, includes some outright blues/rock guitar alongside a variety of straight-jazz solos (including flute and tuba). Lots of percussion and brass throughout the suite, and some vocals later.

Another Mike Patton project, although I've heard he's not always playing with the band these days. Nice loud rock stuff, this one with a jazzy lope to it. But as you'd expect, the album flips through quite a few styles from track to track.

Tomahawk came up when a listener called about that Joel Harrison track that started the show, saying it reminded him of, well, these guys. Discovering we had their CDs in the library, I skimmed through a few tracks and liked what I heard. Learning from listeners can be so cool sometimes.

* Yellowcake -- "You, in My Shadow" -- Yellowcake (Rastascan, 2006)

Previously noted here. This is one of the longer tracks, opening with a chugging jungle rhythm that's almost catchy.

Matt Davignon -- "Sculpture by Erosion" -- Softwetfish (Edgetone, 2006)

One artist I didn't manage to include in last week's celebration of the Edgetone New Music Summit. Davignon does various sound-manipulation experiments, such as taking a drum machine and mutating the output -- splicing it, sampling it, slowing it down -- into strange steely soundscapes.

Another CD of long collages built from performances at the High Mayhem festival in New Mexico. These tend toward the quiet and noise/electronic. For a more disjoint take on the same idea, see this CD.

* Chick Corea and Bela Fleck -- "Children's Song #6" -- The Enchantment (Concord, 2007)

A bit of classical air to this piano/banjo duet, Bela Fleck showing some of his serious side. Intersting and light stuff, just the two of them throughout the disk. Not very edgy but they sure can play; you've got some bluegrass and jazzier stuff elsewhere on here.
