First of four planned shifts today, subbing for DJ Fo, spinning his usual mix of jazz, world, and blues.
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
Horizontal lines denote microphone breaks.
* Jason Lindner Big Band -- "The 5 Elements and the Natural Trinity" -- Live at the Jazz Gallery (Anzic, 2007)
* Sacambaya -- "Paja Brava" ["Wild Straw"] -- Kollasuyumanta Pacha [From the Heart of South America] (Arc, 2007)
Shangoya -- "Swing the Thing" -- Alive at 25 (Mouthpiece, 1997?)
Led by the late Aldric Peter Norton on steel drums and vocals,
Shangoya was a taste of Africa for the heartland. Norton was from
Trinidad and settled in Minneapolis, of all placs, assembling
a band of Americans and Africans to do happy party music with
strong reggae hints (but with stronger beats than reggae). I would
imagine their effect was like an early
Konono No. 1.
* [Unknown] -- [Untitled track 3] -- Bougouni Yaalali (Yaala Yaala, 2007)
Yaala Yaala is apparently a world music offshoot of Drag City.
* Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Dr. John -- "It's All Over Now" -- V/A: New Orleans Brass (Putumayo, 2007)
* David Byrne -- "The Sound of Business" -- The Knee Plays (Nonesuch, 2007; orig. released 1985)
Boozoo Chavis and the Majic Sounds -- "Billy Goat Number Three" -- Boozoo, That's Who (Rounder, 1993)
* The Savoy Family Band -- "'Tite Robe Courte" -- Turn Loose but Don't Let Go (Arhoolie, 2007)
* Kemp Harris -- "Edenton" -- Edenton (Righteous Mischief, 2006)
* Ari Brown, Earma Thompson, John Brumbach -- "Madam Queen" -- Madam Queen (The Sirens, 2007)
* Deep Blue Organ Trio -- "The Chant" -- Folk Music (Origin, 2007)
Gerardo Nunez -- "Sevilla" -- Calima (Alula, 1998)
* Alan Pasqua -- "Wicked Good" -- The Antisocial Club (Cryptogramophone, 2007)
Henry Butler -- "This Is Where I Live" -- The Game Has Just Begun (Basin Street, 2002)
