General to-do list:
* Todd Sickafoose -- "Tiny Resistors" -- Tiny Resistors (Cryptogramophone, 2008)
* Graham Reynolds and the Golden Arm Trio -- "Sesum's Lament" -- Cult of Color (Shamrock, 2008)
This album consists of music composed for a ballet, so it's got a
direct and melodic approach, with "Sesum's Lament" being particularly
sad (being, you know, a lament and all). Anyway, like I said:
Great to see Reynolds is still in Austin and still cranking out
the music.
? Ingrid Laubrock -- "Zugunruhe" -- Sleepthief (Intakt, 2008)
"Zugunruhe" is a lovely, open jazz improvisation. Just the first few seconds,
with its plush sax tones and Rainey's supple drumming, make me want to see the
upcoming show. Piano from Liam Noble rounds out the group for the album.
Laubrock plays in a variety of contexts; abrasive noise; polished commercial bebop; and lush Brazilian jazz (the group Nois 4, with
singer Monica Vasconcelos. It's to her credit that she's also willing to
do such experimental work.
Fronted by
Phillip Greenlief on sax,
with Lisa Mezzacappa
on bass and
Jason Levis on
drums. A nice "inside"-leaning group that's probably going to record a
CD later this year. I'll be looking forward to it.
* Junk Box -- "Computer Virus" -- Cloudy Then Sunny (Libra, 2008)
* H.E.R. -- "The Office" -- Songs About the Mysteries of Housework and Nature (Persian Cardinal, 2008)
The Harlem Experiment -- "Rigor Mortis" -- V/A: The Harlem Experiment (Ropeadope, 2008)
? Lisa Mezzacappa's Before and After -- "Richard's House of Blues" -- [Unreleased track from her Web site, 2008]

* Cyro Baptista -- "Macunaima" -- Banquet of the Spirits (Tzadik, 2008)
Previously noted here.
Great to see Reynolds is still doing it. I saw him live on one
of his trips through town, about a decade ago. His Golden Arm "Trio"
consists of however many people he's using at the time, so I got to
experience GAT as a solo act, at least for part of his set. Drums and/or
piano, is what I mainly remember (hey; it was 10 years ago!)
* Bill Dixon -- "Darfur" -- 17 Musicians in Search of a Sound: Darfur (AUM Fidelity, 2008)
Previously noted here.
* Mute Socialite
-- "Me'T" -- More Popular Than Presidents and Generals (Dephine Knormal, 2008)
Previously noted here.
I wasn't familiar with Laubrock's name until she showed up on
the events calendars at
Bayimproviser.com and
TransbayCalendar.org.
She'll be in town Wednesday, Sept. 3, sharing a bill at
21 Grand with Citta di Vitti.
? Citta di Vitti -- "Number Eleven" -- [Unreleased; recorded 2007]
A swingy, jazzy trio playing original music inspired by the
films of Michelangelo Antonioni.
Previously noted here.
* Glass Farm Ensemble -- "Hout" (composer Louis Andriesson) -- In Four (Innova, 2008)
Debut CD from a quartet of new-music classical players.
Founded in NYC, they've
been around since 2000 and have put on a nice array of shows (check out
their Web page).
* Industrial Jazz Group -- "The Job Song" -- Leef (Evander, 2007)
Previously noted here.
Previously noted here.
* Cristian Amigo -- "Kingdom of Jones" -- Kingdom of Jones (Innova, 2008)
Previously noted here.
* bLevin bLechdom -- "Foyer Fire" -- Gular Flutter (Aagoo, 2008)
Danceable noise and samples; electronics made catchy. At least,
that's how this track was. bLevin bLechdom
performs around town quite a bit, and I'm going to have to catch a show
one of these days.
Phill Niblock -- "Early Winter" -- Music by Phill Niblock (XI, 1993)
For those who didn't get their, er, Phill last week.
Yes, another droney piece, this time for
string quartet, flute, bass flute recorded on eight tracks, sample/synth
voices, and computer.
Played this to note the upcoming
San Francisco Electronic Music Festival.
See above.
Ornette Coleman -- "The Ark" -- Town Hall 1962 (ESP-Disk)
Classic 23-minute piece with Ornette's classic trio of David Izenzon
(bass) and Charles Moffat (drums). A towering classic that's finally
back in the hands of ESP and is among their recent rereleases
(New York Eye & Ear Control is in that batch, too).
