Always Be Impeccable with Your Word

The magic of “The Four Agreements” that don Miguel Ruiz brought to the world in 1997 is that they can be used to explore and change our lives at whatever depth we choose. Some people read them, find them interesting, and put them aside. Others use them to ruthlessly cleanse their minds of all the limiting beliefs and agreements that have been programmed into their minds throughout their lives.

The agreement to be “impeccable with your word” is perhaps the most misunderstood of The Four Agreements. Many people confuse impeccable with older meanings of “integrity” or “honesty” such as always telling the truth or not stealing. It is important to remember that don Miguel defines being impeccable with your word as “not using your word against yourself.” That is huge. It means that you never judge yourself and deny your fundamental perfection as a manifestation of the Divine.

To never go against yourself demands absolute self love and acceptance of yourself just the way you are. It means that you never see yourself as a powerless victim of any person, event, institution or natural phenomenon. Through this acceptance of yourself, you come to accept all of Creation as perfect, also. In that acceptance, there is perfect peace.
