DEALER SOLD PET DOGS FOR HUMAN FOOD

Ervin Stebane of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, dealt in dogs and cats he bought from "Bunchers." He made a nice little profit selling the slaughtered dogs as exotic meat to Orientals to whom dog meat was part of their native cuisine. The other animals he sold to laboratories for medical experimentation. He was doing all right on his Circle S Ranch just outside of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, until

Last Chance for Animals came along.

Last Chance for Animals has been notorious for years. They were the ones who used to break into animal medical research labs at night, free the animals and take them to vets for repair of their wounds. They got arrested so many times that for several years they went underground. When they emerged, it was to make a video film of the inside of a medical lab. It was jail again, but SUPPRESS distributed the film to small PBS stations. It wasn't terribly popular; too horrifying, so Last Chance for Animals embarked on another crusade: Catching Class B animal vendors on film. They caught Ervin Stebane in the act-this time with a regular TV studio camera crew to film the action as witnesses. They caught him killing and butchering somebody's large black and white dog for somebody else's dinner. They ruined his day, ruined his business. He lost his license.

The Bunchers have an even more profitable business than the Class B dealers who sell to animal research labs because Bunchers get their animals for free. They just pick them up here and there, on the street or from unlocked cars or from the free Animal ads in the newspaper. Then they sell them to licensed Class B animal vendors for a nice profit. Apparently they don't even bother to remove the dog licenses, as one of Stebane's waiting sacrifices had local dog tags with the owner's name on them.

Chris DeRose, recently out of jail where he was sentenced for intruding on the privacy of the medical lab in order to make that film, took on the action at the Circle S Ranch. It wasn't that cheap and easy. To make a court case, the LCA had to wire a licensed private detective, audio tape those who came to buy dog meat, videotape Stebane's operation, travel from California to Wisconsin in order to cover the case, not to mention the cost of the concealed video camera.

"The money just keeps going out and going out," says DeRose. Want to help out? Send money.

I am proud of DeRose, pleased that I wrote to him the last time he was in jail. This time it's the criminal who goes to jail, not the person who revealed the crime. LCA has caught several of these Class B animal vendors. They hope to catch more. They hope the state will stop licensing them to sell our pets and "free to a good home" animals to horrifying medical laboratories or for meat for someone's table.

Want to see the film that caused Mr. Stebane's downfall? Watch for it on USA cable network in September, or, for a $50 donation, you can have it for your own. Want to see the animal lab film which sent DeRose to jail for trespass? Contact SUPPRESS.

Want to learn how to spot "Bunchers" on their rounds? LCA's free "Pet Theft Action Pack" will help.

MYSTERIES

The Mysterious, Sudden Death of Vincent Foster

E WAS INVOLVED IN UNCOVERING the May scandal of corruption in the White House Travel Bureau, which caused the firing of all members of that bureau. He was a childhood friend of President Clinton, described by Clinton as his "Rock of Gibraltar," someone Clinton could lean on. He was a close friend of Hillary Clinton, a member of her law firm, recently named "Lawyer of the Year" in Arkansas. He was chief deputy of the White House Counsel's Office. He had a happy home life and recently had proudly shown his children through the White House. He was a responsible person, who had been a winner all his life, and this was the day when the new White House had a big win: the nomination of US. District Judge Luis Freeh and hearings for Supreme Court Justice nominee Ruth Ginsburg.

His last recorded words were a smiling "I'll see you later" at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 20th. Presumably, immediately thereafter, though unacquainted with the Washington area, he found his way to an obscure Civil War Memorial Park in Virginia, sat down, put a gun to his mouth, and killed himself. Three hours later an anonymous call alerted the police, who found the body.

He left no suicide note for his family.

Does this scenario make sense to you? It doesn't to me. As a fiction story, no editor would accept it. As fact, it is not acceptable either. As I recall so many assassinations, from Black activists in the '40s to Martin Luther King, Jr., from the Kennedy brothers to the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan (and how different his pronouncements were before and after that event and how different his mental condition as well!). These have made me a cynic about such events.

Found dead at a Civil War memorial? I cannot help recalling the macabre sense of humor of the CIA: the spy plane labeled 007, the humorous names they give to their various enterprises. Was the area where Vincent Foster Jr.'s body found also symbolic? Was his death a warning to President Clinton?

I don't know what further investigation will uncover about the death of Vincent Foster. Will we be told of these investigations or will the story merely disappear from the media, a one-day wonder which will always remain a mystery?

Will Clinton speak up? No. But I have my suspicions.

The Aspirin Mystery

IF YOU GIVE YOUR CHILDREN or teenagers St. Joseph's Aspirin for Children or Effervescent Aspirina, you may be putting them at risk of a serious neurological disease called Reyes Syndrome.

Dr. David Wolfe, Director of Public Citizens Health Research Group in Washington, D.C., says, "Hundreds of American children are dead and hundreds more are severely brain-damaged because of aspirin-caused Reyes Syndrome." Mystery: This fact was known to Plough Corporation, maker of St. Joseph's Aspirin in 1981. Why were there no warnings on the package or bottle until 1986? Why are we all so trusting that we do not read instructions or warnings on across-the-counter medical products? Why have doctors urged adults to use an aspirin a day to prevent heart problems when the instructions say clearly that adults should not take this product for more than 10 consecutive days? The list of things for which St. Joseph should not be used is a long one; flu, chicken pox, arthritis in children, fever after 3 days/ No persons with asthma should use it.

The ACLU News reports that ACLU is suing Plough for conducting a big campaign in the Latino community while instructions are not in Spanish. Plough declares it doesn't have to.

Perhaps we don't really have to take St. Joseph's aspirin. But whatever you substitute, beware! Read the label!?

The Moon Mystery.

IF YOU LOVE A MYSTERY, you should be fascinated by this one: Why is the moon radioactive? Why is one spot far "hotter" than the rest? Why is the moon's surface covered with glass? The Apollo astronauts described it as a "glassy glaze." These and other strange facts about the moon disclosed in the Book of Lists #2 make it even more mysterious than it was before the Apollo astronauts trod upon it. However, if you were in New Mexico when stores were selling souvenirs of the first atomic test, pieces of pretty pale green glass made from radioactive fused sand, you'd start thinking deep thoughts about this! Add those "flying saucers" which suddenly huddled around earth after that first atomic test and you'll find yourself with a mystery so hot you'll be tempted to drop the whole thing like a hot potato!
