Q&A with Dr. Elson Haas
Concerns about Magnesium
Q. Are there any concerns with taking 1000mg of Magnesium daily?
A. Magnesium is relaxing to blood vessels and muscles, and thus can help with blood pressure, asthma, and insomnia. The most common problems with supplemental magnesium intake are loose bowels and diarrhea. This is worse with magnesium citrate and less with magnesium glycinate. However, most people don't need 1,000mg daily; about 300-600mg daily is more usual and appropriate. You can read more about magnesium in my book, Staying Healthy with Nutrition.
