1996, november 26 - 27 - student-incited riots lead to nation-wide strikes
the international airport in french guiana was closed for two days as a general strike was called in the riot-torn country. france's oversea territories minister was in the country attempting to negotiate an end to the riots with student groups, unions and local politicians.
the riots started when high school students revolted over the poor conditions of their schools and lack of job prospects. the official unemployment in the country is 23 per cent with higher rates amongst young people.
