1996, may 1 - 2 - millions of public employees win government concessions
mounted cops attacked workers demanding wage hikes and the resignation of president wasmosy. several workers were arrested. the attack came during a two-day general strike for these demands that began on may day.
workers and youth took to the streets the week before when wasmosy reacted to an attempted coup by general lino oviedo by "forcing him to resign" and naming him minister of defense. the mass protest by workers and youth forced wasmosy to back down.
