Orion
has lost his head in a red fog, a vast nebula that
dwarfs the more famous star-forming regions of his
loins. Refer back to the opening images to get the
perspective: Meissa, or lambda Orionis, the star
that marks Orion's head, lies at the center of a
cloud hundreds of light years
across.
From
here we'll slide down Barnard's Loop, the vast cape
flowing out behind & beside Orion, curving all
the way around to his remarkable foot, Rigel - the
seventh brightest star in the sky. Its glow powers
the reflection nebula Ic2118, the Witch's Head. She
rides her broom upside down at Orion's feet, so
we'll join her for a quick topsy-turvy
spin.
Rigel
is only 815 light-years away - so we'll already be
halfway home from this trip to the Great Orion
Nebula.
