John Medica was a Slovonian immigrant who owned property on the rocky east side of the city of Santa Rosa, California. Over a period of 30 years, beginning in 1955, he built an incredible garden of rockwork and cactus. He began with a rock wall enclosing 4 acres around his house, using rock from a quarry on his land. By the time John Medica was finished in 1985 he had created 29 structures - castles, bridges, benches and fountains, all connected by stone pathways. There were large stone archways over his entry drive, topped with little conical trees made of mortar and little stones. The fence surrounding the property was also embellished by similar arches and trees. The overall effect was a strange fairyland made of rock, stone and cactus.
