This was our 3rd trip to Bonaire. In the past we've stayed at Sand Dollar, but
since there is no longer the Green Parrot Restaurant, we decided to go to Captain Don's.
Nothing against Sand Dollar, and I hope the best for it, but I only noticed about 10-15
cars in the parking lot, and only 1-2 in front of the Mango Restaurant.
We had a great time. We stayed 2 weeks. We dove 29 times. About 15 of the dives were boat dives. Perhaps 10 more were shore dives, and the balance were night dives from the "Baby Dock" at Don's. We had NO trouble with crime. We left our AB Rental truck unlocked with the windows down and dove several sites to the south, namely Atlantis, Angel City and Salt Pier (with a Divemaster). We rented a Villa at Captain Don's and really loved it. We were on the ground floor of the 3rd Villa complex and felt like we owned the place. Well, OK, the bed was a little worn out, but its hard to complain since everything was so nice. I took my laptop to check in periodically with my Daughter Anna. I connected wirelessly at the Bonaire Chat N Browse. We really like the staffers at Don's. Liz, Johnathon, Chris and Sherman were delightful. Our package included 1 boat dive per day and unlimited shore diving. We also opted from the "ala carte" selections and kayaked through the Mangrove forrest. Boat dive briefings tended to repeat the theme of regrets about the damage from Lenny, but I was not the least dissappointed. After all, its been years and at 30+ feet, there's no damage to be seen anyway. We dined occasionally at Rum Runner's at Don's and also cooked in our unit a lot. It is always fun to shop at the Cultimara in town. On our first Wednesday on the Island, we went to "El Dia de Rincon" which is the celebration in Rincon for Queens Holiday. This was VERY much like the festival we attended in February back in 1997. Bonarians really know how to have a good time. View the videos below. Also, I have to mention the great itinerary we had by working with Michael McGlothlin at Dirt Cheap Travel. We got cheaper flights by more than $100 per person round trip than I could find anywhere on the web by myself. We flew American and American Eagle which was a treat compared to KLM. It was nice flying north out of the Flamingo Airport rather than turning west to Curacao. |
