Notes

10. Samuel G. Ludwick

MARRIAGE: Marriages, Summit County, Ohio (900,960). On 25 March 1841 Samuel G. Ludwick and En (index says Eve) Dick were married. DAR has 26 March, but it looked like 25 March to me on original record. Later on film, applications show Samuel G. Ludwick and Eve Dick, Township of Franklin, applied for marriage license 22 Mar 1841.

MARRIAGE: Marriages, Summit County, Ohio (900,960). On 4 Aug 1849 Samuel Ludwick and Maria Davis were married. Believe the date should be 4 Sep 1849. The application for a marriage license (filed by Mathias Davis) for Samuel Ludwick and Maria Davis, Franklin Township, was filed 3 Sep 1849; the application date is after the marriage date. The applications are filed chronologically. The marriages are filed by the date they are recorded. This marriage record was filed 20 Sep 1849. I believe the real marriage date is 4 Sep 1849.

MIGRATION: Samuel came to Michigan later than the rest of the family. He had a child born about 1857 in Ohio.

11. Mary or Polly Ludwick

Known as Polly according to information from Douglas Gross.

The census records for Jacob Ludwick show a missing daughter. My reasoning for placing Mary as a daughter of Jacob Ludwick is as follows. In my notes for George Ludwick, Sr., I have listed some unplaced Ludwicks. One of them is a Mary Ludug (Ludwig) married to a Henry Disk (Dick) 28 March 1839, Stark County, Ohio. The reason I think this Mary Ludwick is the missing daughter is 1) she married before 1840 which would account for her not being on the 1840 Ohio Census with her father, and 2) in a land record dated Feb. 19, 1845, after Jacob Ludwick dies intestate, Henry Dick, Jacob Dick, and ... Dick, are mentioned along with Jacob Ludwick's other eight children, as his heirs at law. I could not understand where the Dicks came from. A possible explanation is Mary Ludwick had already died at this point, and these are her husband and children. 3) A land record showing section 30 lists Jacob Ludwick and Isaac Dick with a guardian transferring land. Other transfers for this section 30 list all of Jacob Ludwick's other children.

This theory is supported by information supplied to Dave Laudenslager from Douglas Gross. It lists a Henry Dick 1814-1900 with a first wife Polly Ludwig and children Jacob Dick and Isaac Dick.

Henry Dick

IDENTITY: Dave Laudenslager said Douglas Gross had a record that showed Henry Dick's parents were Peter and Eve Dick. Not listed as heir of Peter Dick in land record signed March 13, 1849. However, in very next record he is transferring the same parcel of land to the same person, Elizabeth Stoute. He may have done his transfer later on Sep 24, 1853 because he lived out of state. Both entries were recorded on Aug 21, 1856. Summit County, Ohio, Vol. 31, p. 308 (854,347)

12. Jacob Ludwick

MARRIAGE: Marriages, Summit County, Ohio (900,960). On 3 Dec 1846 Jacob Ludwig and Matiltha Greenho (DAR has Gresaho) were married. Andrew Greenhoe appeared and made application for a marriage license in Franklin Township for Jacob Ludwick and Matilda Greenhoe on 1 Dec 1846.

MARRIAGES: The 1860 Census lists Jacob's wife as Matilda. The 1870 and later Censuses list his wife as Odelia. This looks like two marriages. However, on the 1900 Census Odelia says she has been md 65 (should be 55) years and has 8 children, 8 living. This would only be true if Matilda and Odelia were the same person.

I am guessing that the info I added for Michael Greenhoe is for the right Michael Greenhoe. But if it is right, why are some of the younger Greenhoe children not living with Rachel in 1880?

DEATH: Obit says died at home of son Seymour Koutz who lived 1 mile east of Elwell, Gratiot, Michigan. Surviving her at death were two grandsons, one granddaughter, two sisters, and one brother. (The sisters are Susannah and Barbara. The brother is John.)

OBIT: "Mrs. Rachel Ludwick-Kontz-Greenhoe was born March 31st, 1829 in Summit County, Ohio and died at the home of her son Seymour Kontz, one mile east of Elwell, Thursday night, January 29.
"In 1850 her father moved his family to Ionia County, Michigan. Four years later on August 20 Rachel married Edmund E. Kontz. Five children were born to them but four of the children and the father died in the month of September, 1865, leaving her only Seymour.
"The widow was again married in August of 1870 to Michael Greenhoe and their one son, Gilbert, now lives in Alma. In her early youth Mrs. Greenhoe became a member of the United Brethren church and has always been a faithful member. On account of old age and infirmity she has been deprived for some time of the opportunity to attend church service. Two grandsons, one granddaughter, a brother, John Ludwick, of Jackson, Mrs. Asa Dalrymple of Elwell, and another sister, mourn her loss. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Elwell M. E. church by Rev Baker. Interment was made at North Plains."

BIRTH: Born in Stark County which on March 3, 1840 became Summit County.

Levi is a son of George Ludwick, Jr., who is a brother of Samuel Ludwick. Since George Ludwick, Jr. died so young, Levi was raised by his uncle Samuel Ludwick.

LAND: The real estate of the Jacob Burgner homestead, a quarter section of land in
Franklin township, Summit county, Ohio, was sold by the executor, April 2,
1849, for $3,900--$1,900 cash, $1,000 due April 1, 1850, and $950 April 1,
1851,--to Samuel Ludwick, a neighbor, who bought it as guardian for the
benefit of his ward, Levi Ludwick, son of George Ludwick, deceased, son of
George Ludwick, Sen., deceased, who thirty years previous to this date had
bought an adjoining quarter section of Jacob Burgner. The two purchases
amounted to 328 and 81-160 acres. Levi Ludwick took possession of the
farm and has made it his home during the past forty years. In his anxiety to
raise large crops of wheat he cut down the fine grove of chestnut trees which
had been planted by the Burgner brothers, but he left intact the belt of native
timber on the upland, which still serves him as a wind-break. A substantial
brick house, a large bank barn, convenient out-buildings, well-kept fences
and fine horses and cattle are among the evidences of his thrift from careful
management. A shallow well dug near the house for a cistern, by Wm. H.
Becker, affords a constant supply of pure, soft water, though unconnected
with the house roof and being only a few rods above the old sulphur spring.
Mr. Ludwick is an enterprising horse-dealer and ships car loads of horses to
eastern markets.

Martin Grill

Portrait and Biographical Album, Gratiot Co., Michigan, 1884, 977.449 D3p

Martin Grill, farmer, section 30, North Shade Township, was born Sept. 15, 1830, in Pennsylvania.
Martin left Pennsylvania and came to Ohio with his parents and lived for one year in Stark county.
In 1840 they moved to Summit County (or maybe just the county name changed).

Martin Grill remained under the parental roof until he was about 21 years old, when he went to Illinois and for a time was engaged in farming. He spent one year in a saw-mill at Decatur, Illinois, after which he went to Indiana and stopped with his brother for a short time, and after this he returned to his home in Ohio. He remained at home helping his father on the farm and in the mill until he was about 25 years of age. In the mill, our subject did some of the hardest work that ever falls to man to perform, as the mill was kept running day and night for a great part of the year.

He was married to Rachel Ludwick, daughter of Samuel and Mary E. (Dick) Ludwick, natives of Pennsylvania. Mr. Ludwick followed farming in his native State, and later in life moved to Summit Co., Ohio, where they both passed the remainder of their days, the former dying in 1855, and the latter in 1856.

To Mr. and Mrs. Grill have been born ten children, as follows: Mary S., Hiram W., Amanda E., Eliza J., Henry D., Emma J., Martha, Martin, Charlie W. and Clara E.

Mr. Grill came to Gratiot County in 1868 and located upon section 30, North Shade Township, where he has a good farm. He is regarded as a man of good judgment by his neighbors, and as being a fair, upright and honorable citizen, as is evinced by the people of his district having chosen him as Assessor for 14 terms in succession.

Mr. G. has suffered twice from the enmity of the elements. July 3, 1859, the lightning struck and totally demolished his father's barn, the contents of which belonged to Martin. March 12, 1871, his house was burned, and almost all the household goods were also consumed.
