Bundesliga 1965-66
The Bundesliga had expanded to 18 clubs, with Tasmania replacing Hertha by
DFB fiat. In fact, all the Tasmania players were on vacation, and they
were contacted via an announcement on Radio Luxembourg. Obviously, they
sucked, going down as the worst team in Bnudesliga history, through no
fault of their own.
The title was taken by one of the preseason favorites, 1860 München.
The Lions "won" the race in the huge match in Dortmund in the penultimate
round. Borussia was just off their greatest triumph, a victory over
Liverpool in the European Cupwinners Cup final, but were beaten 0-2 by
1860. Unlike defending champ Werder Bremen, 1860 relied on attack, and
recently transferred Timo Konietzka (from Dortmund!) scored 26, combining
with another 15 from Rudi Brunnenmeier, one of the tragic "could have
been" of German soccer. Actually, Konietzka, who scored the first
ever Bundesliga goal two seasons ago, also had another 1st minute
winner: against newcomer Bayern München in the opening game.
This goal would eventually turn out to be the difference in the
title race. Bayern served notice that they would contend for years to
come, with youngsters Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller
forming the nucleus of the eventual greatest dynasty.
On the bottom, hapless Tasmania managed to win their 1st and last match,
just about getting pounded silly everywhere else. Joining them in the down
elevator was Borussia Neunkirchen, who suffered the disgrace of losing 1-9
at home to 1860. (Tasmania did them one better, losing 0-9 at home to
HSV.) Tasmania also set another record: only 827 fans showed up for
their game against Mönchengladbach. But they also had the best
showing too: 81,000 saw their opening 2-0 win over Karlsruhe. Both teams
saved
by expansion, Schalke and Karlsruhe stay up, although they both sucked.
Eventual powerhouse Gladbach had an inauspicious debut; the newcomer was
happy just to stay up. Nevertheless, some of their yonug talent was also
beginning to show: Günter Netzer and Jupp Heynckes.
