It was originally started as Altonaer Cricket-Club, but switched to soccer a year later. In the early years, Altonaer FC was perhaps the no.1 club in the city, and well-known throughout Germany. The first final of the German Championship was hosted in the club's old Exerzierplatz stadium, in 1903, between VfB Leipzig and DFC Prague.
However, the rise of the other Hamburg clubs meant also the slow but steady decline of Altona as anything but a local club.
Although a charter member of the original Regionalliga in 1963, Altona soon retreated back to the environs of the Hamburg based leagues. It was not until 1996 that they made the jump back up to the now 3rd division Regionalliga. The adventure in "pro" conditions lasted only one season, and after relegation, the club voluntarily withdrew back down to the Verbandsliga.
