A few famous players got their start at Augsburg: Helmut Haller, Bernd Schuster and Karl-Heinz Riedle.
The 1998-99 season was poor, with FCA struggling against relegation until the end. The next season was better, and despite poor performances. The goal of qualifying for the combined Regionalliga was achieved, but then the DFB denied the club a license, plunging them into the Bayernliga. However, their stay at the 4th division was short, and they went back up within 2 seasons. After a short stay in the 3rd division, Augsburg would then establish itself as a solid 2.Liga club in the mid 2000s. Whether they can make the next step up seems questionable, but it has taken them a long time to re-establish themselves as a respectable club.
The 2011 season ended with Augsburg gaining promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. Everybody predicted the team of nobodies to immediately go down, but they astounded the pundits by surviving. The next season, it was more of the same, but on the last day the Augsburgers defeated Furth and remained up again. The 2014 season was the best ever in club history. Once again, a team of unknowns gave 110%, and this time they started collecting points early. As a result, an 8th place finish, and only missing the Europaliga qualification by a single point. They also made history by becoming the first team to defeat Bayern in their dominant run to the title.
