This club has gone through so many name changes, you need a roster to keep track. In 1945, it was founded as SG Chemnitz Nord, changing it's name three years later to BSG Fewa Chemnitz. In 1951, they became BSG Chemie, and in 1953, the city was renamed to Karl-Marx-Stadt. After a few more minor changes, they ended up in 1963 as SC Karl-Marx-Stadt, in 1965 as FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and they became GDR champions the next season. Until reunification in 1990, the club competed as FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, until the city's name was restored to Chemnitz. When CFC was reintegrated into German soccer, they were seeded in the 2nd division, and remained there in the middle for several seasons before finally dropping down.
The 1998-99 season turned out to be a great success. The RNO was very balanced, and each week a different team seized the lead. However, about 2/3 through the season, CFC put together a great run, and left their opponents in the dust. In the promotion playoffs, after losing 0-1 at VfL Osnabrueck, they came back to win the return leg 2-0, thereby gaining promotion to the 2.Liga. The return to the 2nd division proved to be diifcult, as CFC was back down after two seasons.
