Founded 1898, the club currently has about 1200 members.
The greatest achievements were playing in the Bundesliga in 78-79, and again 81-82. In 1991, the club was relegated, but saved at the last minute, as Rot-Weiss Essen was denied a license for financial mismanagement. Finally by 97-98, the piper had to be paid for several years of gross mismanagement, and the club was relegated to the 4th division.
The 98-99 campaign was one of redemption, as Darmstadt won the Oberliga Hessen and returned to the 3rd division. Despite a slow start, in the 2nd half of the season SV98 put together a good run and met their goal - qualification for the new combined Regionalliga. Their first season proved to be one of the better recent results, with a solid 5th place finish. However, within a few years, they were back down again.
