In recent years, Erkenschwick has stood fast with basically an amateur status, despite the increasing costs of competing at the semi-professional level. In 1997, FC Schalke played Erkenschwick in a benefit game to help the club avoid bankruptcy.
Erkenschwick generally established themselves as a solid 3rd division club. They even made a couple appearances in the 2nd division, although this proved to be too difficult
By 1998-99 however, the magic was gone, and they could no longer hide the fact that they were a crap team. So they got the boot. The subsequent season was also a failure, as they were relegated again. In recent years, they've been kicking around in the 5th division, perhaps the lowest in club history.
