FSV is one of the few clubs that also had women's soccer, and they have been one of Germany's stronger teams in the Frauen-Bundesliga. However the club dropped the team in 2006, continuing a trend where most of the better women's teams are independent clubs.
By midseason 1998-99, FSV looked dead and buried. But then the Bornheimer put together a superhuman effort, and managed to save themselves on the last day of the season. The next season turned out to be more of the same. Although the club was doing well until about midseason, they then collapsed and finished out of the Regionalliga zone. They got a last minute repreive with the forcible relegation of Karlsruhe SC Amateurs, but then lost the playoffs to Jahn Regensburg, meaning a return to the 4th division. In 2008, FSV moved into the 2.Liga for the first time in 15 years, and everything looked like just a brief stay like the first time. By winter-break, FSV was dead last. However, in the 2nd half, they came roaring back, and it was enough to avoid relegation, surprising just about everybody. Since then FSV has established themselves as a 2.Liga club, despite minimal resources. The 2012-13 season ended with an amazing 4th place finish. Although this wasn't really in contention for a Bundesliga playoff, it did represent the club's highest ever finish in the Bundesliga era.
