The club's roots go back to 1899, when it was founded as Britannia Leipzig. In 1919, it merged with Hertha of become Leipziger Sportverein. in 1938 it merged with 6 year old Tura to become Tura 1899.
After WWII, the GDR authorities reconstituted the club as BSG Chemie. Success was modest, although they did manage to win a couple of GDR titles in the early 1950s. Oddly enough, during this period, the club was known as SC Lokomotiv. (However, this should not be confused with their bitter rivals, who would be known as 1.FC Lokomotiv Leipzig (later VfB Leipzig). During this period that club was known as SC Rotation.) The Chemie name remained until 1990, when it became FC Grün-Weiß. It kept that name for only a couple of months, when it merged with FSV Böhlen to form the current club. They've struggled in the shadow of the more popular VfB Leipzig.
In the first season as BSG Chemie, they ended up winning the GDR title in 1951. Oddly enough, the affiliation was changed in 1955, and the club became SC Lokomotive. Results were then generally average, and then in 1963, the club became BSG Chemie again. The result? Another GDR title, in 1964. However, that would be the high point, as things started going downhill. For the remainder of the GDR leagues, Chemie bounced up and down between the 1st and 2nd divisions.
Upon reunification, Sachsen had a few decent results, but financial difficulties began to make things difficult.
1998-99 was a disaster. After several half-way decent years in the RNO, Sachsen was faced with a relegation battle. They were finally able to pull it out, but only because other teams were crappier. That makes the next season turnaround even more of a surprise, as Sachsen not only surprised by qualifying for the new combined liga, but became the top team in Leipzig, as rivals VfB failed to make the cut. The first season in the new liga proved to be difficult, but Sachsen managed to squeak into 14th place, saving their butts. However, the DFB played a cruel joke, and denied them a 3rd division license, and Sachsen was forcibly relegated.
In 2008, Sachsen defeated NOFV-Nord squad Greifswalder SV in a playoff to qualify for the new Regionalliga Nord. However, the club continued to suffer financial problems. The taxman was owed some 100,000 euros, and Sachsen was unable to pay. As a result, the club will be forced into insolvency and administration, which carries automatic relegation.
