GAME 1:
WSV opened up the 2001-02 Oberliga campaign with a decent 2-0 win over SW
Essen.
The Lions came out strong, demostarting good speed and physical play. The
guests were lame and easily pushed into the defensive. Nevertheless, weak
finishing prevented WSV from wrapping things up by halftime, particularily
rom last season's top scorer, Alex Kohout. In the 2nd
half, WSV actually let up a bit, but the chances continued to flow.
Jacques Goumai put the Wuppertalers ahead when he was left unmarked in
front of the goal. A few minutes later both Goumai and Kipre missed huge
chances to wrap up the game. Essen only really had a single chance in the
whole game, which brought a nice save from keeper Nils Heese.
The best WSV player was probably the newcomer Jean-Louis Tavarez, who
repeatedly caused problems for the Essen defense, and even had one shot
cleared off the line (although it looked like it actually should have been
called a goal.)
The small crowd of under 1,800 fans is not too surprising, given the fact
that WSV has sucked enough over the past couple of years and wasted most
fan support. However, if this is the start of a decent campaign, we can
expect the numbers to go back up.
