Oberliga Niederrhein, Game 6:
An acceptable performance by WSV in the critical derby against
up-and-coming Borussia Wuppertal. WSV had the unusual role of "visitor" in
the Zoo-Stadion, which finally had more than a few fans - 5,000 estimated
crowd showed up, approximatley 75% for WSV.
Borussia put up a good fight, and several ex-WSVers played key roles in
their lineup.
WSV had the upper hand on the slippery ground, and especially Alex Kohout
was running circles around ex-WsVer Frank Wüster. But the Czech's
reward for his efforts was getting an elbow in the face, giving him a
slight concussion, and forcing him to retire at halftime. Most of teh WSV
pressure in the 1st half could be defended, largely because the red-blues
managed to screwup promising chances all on their own. (e.g. Steup,
Euler).
In the 2nd half, WSV pressure began to increase, and on a couple of
occasions only non-calls by the ref saved Borussia. Wüster looked to
have handled the ball with both hands. A few moments later Christian Broos
chopped down Noel Kipre in the box. Also WSV was getting closer: Vladimir
Hyza's pinpoint cross to Thomas Euler, whose bicycle kick only went inches
over the bar.
Finally, after about 70 minutes, Frank Klemmer caught a perfect cross from
Sven Steup, and easily rammed it home. WSV had the lead, but
disappointedly decided to sit back instead of finishing off Borussia. The
WSV defense was solid, and with Heese secure, there was no major Borussia
threat, but it was a bit deflating.
