Oberliga Niederrhein, GAME 7: (September 29, 2002)
WSV has easy time with lame Eagles
Hardly an impressive performance, although WSV had the game firmly in
grip. Osterfeld, quite decent last season, was total crap. WSV pressed
from the start, and had a couple of early chances, such as Sascha
Walbröhl's miss after about 3 minutes. Kohout missed an open goal,
another good play by Walbröhl brought a nice save from Osterfeld's
keeper. Meanwhile, the Eagles could hardly get out of their half of the
field. After half-an hour, a nice combo by Tavarez and Goumai led to
another huge chance that was wasted.
The 2nd half was more of the same. Finally, Alex Kohout took a cutting
pass from Walbröhl and rammed it home for the 1-0 lead. You'd expect
the Adler to collapse, but WSV simply dicked around and didn't finish them
off. About 20 minutes from time Steup put in a decent cross that bounced
off Kohout's knee for the second goal. Since Osterfeld seemed uninterested
in trying anything, the game peetered out.
Although WSV did seem to press and control most of the game, the lack of
killer instinct is glaring. As a result, too much physical effort was
required, and the players were clearly out of gas with a quater hour to
go. Hardly a stellar performance, which doesn't bode wellwhen facing
tougher opponents.
