Oberliga Niederrhein, Round 16: (December 8, 2001)
WSV struggles, but comes through
Wuppertal continued to stay in contention for the title, despite another
less than impressive performance at home. As usual, WSV created a lot of
chances, but failed to convert. And crass defensive errors led to Aachen
making the game close.
WSV came out strong, and some Thomas Euler opened the scoring with a quick
goal. However, crap defending gave it right back. Keeper Daniel Limberg,
making his 2nd straight start, decided to try and pass the ball to
Vladimir Hyza instead of booting it away. Instead it was stolen by
Tümmler, and he had a free net. This was greeted by derision by the
WSV fans, who generally seem to support Nils Heese as keeper, who has been
one of the best in the league. Why he has been benched by interim coach
Jonny Hey is unclear, but apparently has notyhing to do with performance.
Hey has also benched regular starters Klemmer, Kurt and Walbröhl for
alleged laziness.
Jean-Louis Tavarez gave WSV the lead again, once more with a solid outing
in midfield. But in the 2nd half, WSV threw it away, this time almost an
own goal by Hyza, who had an uncharacteristic crap performance. WSV was
finally able to pull out the victory with a goal by Noel Kipre - but only
after the guests had been reduced to 10 men.
Overall, a poor performance by WSV. Of course the main thing is that they
get the win, but the coaching by interim boss Jonny Hey has not been
impressive. Supposedly fired coach Straka was too conservative and unable
to motivate the players, but there certainly has been no improvement since
the change.
