Oberliga Niederrhein, Round 19:
Critical WSV victory!
A crucial win for WSV in the local derby. This maintains the pressure on
1.FC Köln U23, keeping the Wuppertalers 3 points behind. However,
this decisive match against Velbert was a test that had to be passed.
Things started out as they usually do, with WSV going on the offensive,
but without generating much of a threat. Soon Velbert was having their
way, and quickly took advantage, with Andreas Gensler waltzing through the
WSV defense and putting the guests in the lead. At this point, Velbert
coach Grabotin made a strategic error. Instead of pressing harder against
shellshocked Wuppertal, the guests tried to slow down and freeze the game.
Only 10 minutes later, Sascha Walbröhl equalized for WSV, and from
then on Wuppertal was the dominant team.
In the 2nd half, WSV increased the pressure. However, it took an
outstanding individual effort by Alex Kohout, WSV's best player today. He
raced through the Velbert defense dribbling around Schiermoch and blasting
WSV into the lead. The stunned Velberters tried to revive their dormant
attack, to no avail.
This crucial win sets up WSV with the chance to knock off the Köln
youngsters at home in an upcoming match. Based on a strong performance
over the last 60 minutes, there is still hope for WSV...
