Oberliga Niederrhein, Round 21: (February 23, 2002)
Slow start before ass-kicking
A tale of two halves. WSV started out in their usual lame fashion, at
least after an initial brilliant start. Alex Kohout quickly put Wuppertal
in the lead, and they really should have gone for the jugular. Instead,
they visably relaxed, and 15 minutes later, the Zebras tied the match.
Things got worse as WSV ran around listlessly, falling behind before
evetually slithing into the lockerrooms with a 2-2 tie at half.
Obviously coach Jonny Hey read the riot act, as a determined WSV stormed
out in the 2nd half, ready to kick some Zebra-ass. Again it was Kohout
with the quick score, but wave after wave of WSv attacks assaulted the
Duisburg goal. Their defense finally buckled, and then cracked, and WSV
slammed home a few more to turn it into a rout.
An excellent performance by the leaders in the 2nd half, but this could
have easily gone wrong if it hadn't been for some adjustments at half.
Hopefully, this will serve as a reminder that complacency has no place in
the league. A tougher team might have hijacked some points before we woke
up.
